Price Discrimination by Coupons

Price discrimination is when a company sells the same products at different prices to different types of people to maximize profit. This difference is raised to a whole new level when the companies introduce coupons. Even the same two people that go to the same store that buy the same things in different brands can potentially receive two different coupons. For example, if a company receives more profit through one brand versus another, they can give coupons that sells the first brand at a reduced price, but still gets more profit. People that have not bought frequently from a company can also receive coupons, which introduces them to want to buy from said company again. Another more common way of price discrimination through coupons is buying in bulk. Many companies offer a discount when consumers buy in bulk. This is because they will get more profit in the end. There are so many ways of consumers not taking full advantage of the bulk. Food can spoil, things can get lost, or they will not be needed anymore. Consequently, they will buy more of a product than they will ever need. This benefits the company in the end.

  1. Using coupons as an example is a great idea, and brings up ideas that I never considered. I think most people assume that coupons are supposed to help us save money and take advantage of great deals, when companies can actually trick us into buying more than we planned too because its "such a great deal". This is similar to what has been happening this week with most stores having Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Most stores advertise huge sales and try to convince shoppers that they are only going to get this great deal once, which will lead to them buying more than they may usually end up buying if everything were full price. Like with coupons, we must make sure that we are getting a good price for a product that we will use and are not simply incentivized by the lower prices and big sales.
