Microeconomics of the Gaming Industry

Most of us have played video games as a child and continue to do so now. We are all very familiar with the different gaming platforms on the market. Playstation, Wii, and Xbox are the most popular consoles available right now. These are controlled by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo which creates an oligopoly in the gaming industry.

An oligopoly is when there are a small amount of sellers which fits this industry as Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are the 3 largest ones. Each of them compete with one another in terms of pricing and marketing of the games. This is shown through console exclusive games that only one console has access to. This is a key way to attract customers to buy certain consoles and stray away from others as they have an incentive with the certain console exclusive game. This has really affect Nintendo given the fact that the Wii can't run games as advanced as Playstation or Xbox leaving it really behind in what it can offer. In the past, Sony also used to offer the ability to play online with other players with a purchase of a Playstation, something that Xbox did not offer. This was a popular move considering the fact that Xbox users had to pay a monthly or yearly fee in order to play online with others.

There are also a lot of pricing competition with the Xbox one being priced at $400 and Playstation being priced at $300.

  1. This was interesting how you related the gaming industry, something almost all of us are familiar with, with a concept we have been covering recent in class, oligopolies. It was cool to see how the different consoles take from each other to try to sell their product for consumers to buy. It will be interesting to see what approach these companies take as technology increases with the introduction of VR and other technologies.

  2. I really like this blog, Brandon. I think it is good how you compared all three platforms with each other, showing some of the pros and cons of each of these major firms. I think it is very neat how even though they are the largest companies, they continue to make adjustments and modifications in order to keep their platform "unique" and current. It shows that even when you are at the top, there is room for improvement.

  3. Great post Brandon. As someone who plays a lot of video games, I can learn a lot from this post. I think you did a great job of showing qualities specific to each gaming platform to show the slight differences they may have. Personally, I feel that gaming platforms, although very much appreciated, can be somewhat of a trap. You will spend a lot of money on video games specific to your console of choice, but if you ever want to switch consoles, it feels like you have wasted that money.
