Black November

For many families across the country, it is tradition to dedicate their Thanksgiving to making sure they get the best deals for Black Friday. They may even camp out and wait in line to be the first inside. But for most families, this isn’t the case. Obviously the more common choice on Thanksgiving is to enjoy a delicious feast with friends and family. Yes, the deals are enticing, but it’s hard for families to have only one day to act up on these prices. And this has not gone unnoticed by these companies.

Black Friday is still one of the biggest shopping days of the year, but it now shares the spotlight with Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday, and the two weekend days in between. Online and in-store deals have been arriving sooner every year as each company tries to be the first one to set theirs up. Companies like Amazon open up their Black Friday Deals section every year now on November 1st, 23 days before Black Friday actually happens. And the deals advertised online at this time aren’t much worse than the deals for actual Black Friday. This has increased the amount bought online during the whole month of November to $30.4 billion, about $1 billion in online sales per day. Sales in November have an 18% year-over-year growth. Below is a graph showing the increase in sales over the past years.

Black Friday is no longer a day anymore. Every year sales events are starting earlier and earlier in November. More terms begin to pop up such as "Black Friday week" and "Black Friday weekend”, so at what point will this crave of such low deals become known as “Black November”?

  1. It has been a tradition with my sister to go Black Friday shopping every year and I have noticed in the past couple years that the sales seem to start earlier and earlier. I wasn't sure if I had just noticed for the first time but your blog post confirms my observation. It is crazy how sales that are advertised using "Black Friday" cause billions of dollars to be spent. No wonder stores are making their sales start earlier!

  2. The transition from black Friday to black November seems to be unknown to the average consumer. In doing black Friday research, I found that on average, the best day to get deals in the month of November is the week before thanksgiving and this is the same for cyber Monday. However, people are not aware of this information so they shop the hectic that is Black Friday and may even sacrifice their Thanksgiving.
